Philly's Hidden Gem

Philly

When anyone ventures off to Philadelphia, they usually make it a point on their agenda to indulge in the famous sandwich for which the city is very well known for; the Philly cheese steak. And I am definitely a contender to that sentiment. However Philly does have some other amazing restaurants; many of which have been featured on the acclaimed Food Network television show, Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives. One of which is the Silk City Diner; where my friends and I decided to go to while celebrating our fellow friend’s 21st birthday.

That night, the birthday girl ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, which she described as the best fried chicken she’s ever had, and I can definitely vouch for her; it was delicious. It was accompanied by mashed potatoes, bacon braised collard greens, a jalapeño corn muffin, and honey-chili butter. It was sort of a modern twist on an old Southern classic. We then proceeded to dessert, which was the Warm Chocolate Fudge Brownie topped with chocolate ice cream, crème anglaise, and strawberry sauce. We washed it all down with the White Wine Sangria, which consisted of white wine, apple brandy, Stolichnaya Vanilla Vodka, diced oranges and apples, served on the rocks. The sangria was so refreshing, had a lot of flavor and it wasn’t too overpowered by the alcoholic components.

We loved the restaurant so much we decided to revisit several years later and had the chance to try their brunch menu. We all started off with mimosas. This time around, the highlights were the Smothered Chicken And Waffles (chipotle waffles, sausage gravy, corn puree), and the Huevos Rancheros (black beans, ranchero sauce, guacamole, queso fresco, sour cream, pico de gallo, and two eggs on crisp tortillas). My friends and I can’t get enough of this place. Almost every time I go to Philly, I try and make a stop at Silk City! It is definitely a must-try!
